Science prof gets DOST-Newton Agham PhD scholarship in UK

Prof. Francis S. Legario, a faculty of the Natural Science Department, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), is one of the six qualifiers of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Newton Agham PhD Scholarship grant at the University of Sterling, United Kingdom. The scholarship is a collaboration program of the DOST-Science Education Institute and the British Council.

Prof. Legario will start his PhD in Aquaculture at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Sterling on May 1, 2017.

Based on his answer to the questions for Newton Agham Programme grant awardees, his proposed PhD research will be on climate change and environmental diseases, specifically on thermal influence in microbial pathogenicity in aquaculture systems. The study will uncover the relationship between water temperature changes and the ability of bacterial pathogens to cause disease outbreaks in aquaculture species especially in the tropical setting.

According to him, the relevance of his research to the Philippines’ economic development and/or social welfare contributes towards food security, employment and socio-economic status in the Philippines since aquaculture is a livelihood in many areas of the country.

The award entitles Mr. Legario to funding and consumables cost from Newton Agham Programme of L65, 200 and Php 4.5 million from the DOST.

1,956 graduates receive degree from ISAT U

One thousand nine hundred and fifty six (1,956) graduates received degree from the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) during its 83^rd Commencement Exercises held on April 5, 2017.

Class 2017 was composed of graduates from the following disciplines: 1, 210- baccalaureate courses, 416- Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering , 257- Evening Vocational Course, 46- Master’s Degree, 16- Doctorate degree and 11- post baccalaureate (Diploma in Teaching) degree.

Sixty-two students were bestowed with Academic Honors (13 Magna Cum Laude and 49 Cum Laude). 74 graduates received academic Merit Awards and 272 were recipient of other Curricular Awards.

2 profs attend case study teaching workshop

Two ISAT U professors attended the three-day case study teaching workshop in Metro Manila on April 3-5, 2017. The workshop was sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development-Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for Development (USAID-STRIDE) and the William Davidson Institute (WDI), University of Michigan.

Professors Joselito Trandio Mendoza and Godelyn G. Hisole were among the 33 applicants who hurdled the open competition and given priority due to their commitment to teaching using case studies and a plan to conduct cross-disciplinary follow-on trainings for their colleagues on teaching via/with case studies.

The workshop was offered by WDI to 85 Filipino faculty members who have written and published case studies to the STRIDE Case Collection. It explored the methods of teaching a university course using the case studies from the STRIDE Case Collection. It also seek to create a network of academic and industry researchers to spur innovation that brings about inclusive economic growth.

Iloilo Science and Technology University was honored as the first and the only university whose invitation was accepted by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner J. Prospero E. De Vera III as the Guest Speaker of the university’s 83rd Commencement Exercises on April 5, 2017 .

“To tell you the truth, this is my first and only commencement address in a state university since President Rodrigo Roa Duterte appointed me CHED commissioner in August 2016 and I have, as a matter of practice, declined all invitations to speak in graduation exercises because of my very tight schedules,” he said. “I decided to stay in the country because I had accepted your invitation today. Ganyan kayo kalakas sa akin. Pero huwag ninyo akong isusumbong sa Presidente baka utusan akong humabol sa Netherlands.” Commissioner De Vera was supposed to be in Amsterdam, Netherlands as an adviser of the Philippine negotiating panel with the National Democratic Front, New Peoples’ Army and Communist Party of the Philippines (NDF/CPP/NPA) to start the 4th round of talks.

The Commissioner started his address to the 1,956 graduating students giving emphasis to the role of parents in their success and the hardship they endure to make their children complete a course. He requested all graduating students to stand up, look and smile at their parents say thank you by a thumbs up sign.

The importance of how will the graduates use their diploma in the future was underlined by De Vera, “Like being given a stone or clay, nobody gets to appreciate your diploma unless you sculpt or mold it creatively into something of aesthetic or artistic value.”

The role of Philippine higher learning institutions like ISAT U as an instrument of every Filipino family in poverty alleviation and the CHED’s all out support of providing access to higher education was also given emphasis by the commissioner. “We at the Commission are fully support of the important role now being played by Iloilo Science and Technology University in promoting access for all students that seek it.”

He also called on the graduate to increase their competencies considering that employment opportunities are fast becoming a scarce resources. “Each graduate are a privileged few that completed higher education and it is their responsibility to make full use of their new knowledge and competencies,” he said.

Commissioner De Vera capped his message by challenging the graduating class to dare to dream and go for it, “You will never possess what you are unwilling to pursue.” He punched on the challenge to every graduate’s heart by saying: “So dare to dream and believe. Start now. Start today. I shall leave you with the challenge to make your life a masterpiece. “

CIT grad tops most outstanding graduate search

Gio Asher T. Tagabi, a Bachelor of Science major in Electronics Technology of the College of Industrial Technology, topped the Search for ISAT U Most Outstanding Graduates for academic year 2016-2017. Tagabi will be graduating Magna Cum Laude.

April Joy M. Daanton of the College of Education and Alyssa Joyce H. Golingay of the College of Arts and Sciences came in second and third place, respectively. Daanton is taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Technology and Livelihood Education while Golingay will be graduating with a BS in Mathematics degree. Both will also be graduating Magna Cum Laude.

Completing the top four is Kristine Joy L. Casalmer a graduating Cum Laude of the BS in Architecture of the College of Engineering and Architecture.

The four were chosen as the best from among the graduating students of their respective colleges. The criteria for selection of the most outstanding graduates are the academic excellence (50%), extra class activities and community services (20%), leadership (20%) and personality development (10%).

BSEd stude wins story writing reg’l award

A 4th year BSED student was adjudged as the Regional Winner in the Volunteerism Story Writing Contest organized by the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA), National Economic Development Authority, Regional Development Council and the Commission on Higher Education.

Calib Omar B. Bacinillo’s story entitled “Once a Saver, Always a Saver” won for him the top award. His entry featured the life of a SAVER (Special Action Volunteers and Emergency Responders) and illustrated the values of sacrifice, motivation, responsibility, bravery and happiness of being a volunteer. SAVERS is ISAT U volunteer group that responds to emergencies and calamities.

In a letter dated February 2, 2017, PNVSCA Executive Director Joselito C. de Vera underlined the significance of the contest to encourage the participation of the youth and students in volunteer program and activities. He added that the entry will be an important contribution to the growing collection of information materials on volunteerism in the Philippines.

Bacinillo will receive Php 3,000 cash award and a Certificate of Recognition from PNVSCA and the Commission on Higher Education.

Atis perform for OBE learning activity in Literature class

The Atis from Leong, Cabatuan and Lanit, Jaro settlement areas did not only entertain but educate the crowd in their cultural presentation during the outcome-based education (OBE) learning activity of the Literature class held at the Multi-purpose Covered Gym on February 14.

Tribu TLOD (Tribal Leong Organization Development) from Cabatuan, Iloilo entertained the students and faculty through the display of their rich cultural heritage. A vocal solo in indigenous Ati language gained tremendous applause from the audience as the native did good not only in singing but also in beatboxing. TLOD shared their culture in a tribal dance depicting their nomadic lifestyle- hunting, mat weaving, broom-making and other native way of life of an Ati. The spears, bow and arrow and other native ornaments used by the Atis were a good learning tools for the students.

Ati Tribe Mission, Inc. and Tribu Buntatalanit from Lanit, Jaro portrayed some historical events and cultural assimilation in their presentation. The group rendered a choral presentation and a vocal solo in indigenous language featuring the Purchase of Panay. The tribal street dancing by Tribu Buntatalanit portrayed the Ati culture in the modern world. Tribu Buntatalanit was a participant in the 2017 Dinagyang Festival.

For its part, ISAT U Cultural Group presented various cultural dance and musical numbers.

Prof. Maria Elena C. Villa, Literature teacher, said that the objectives of the activity were to enhance the teaching-learning strategy to meet the outcome-based learning; to make the students appreciate and be aware of the cultural characteristics of the Atis; to bring ISAT U closer to the Atis through the students and university officials; to make the Atis feel the beauty of being in a learning institutions and make them see the importance of education, and to make the students feel the culture of the Atis.

As part of the activity, the students initiated a gift giving activity to 50 Ati families who received slippers, used clothing and grocery items.

12 qualify in DOST-SEI scholarship

Twelve 3rd year college students qualified as scholars under the 2016 Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program of the Department of Science and Technology –Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) after passing the October 16, 2016 national examination.

The passers under Republic Act 10612 Program are Jeano Claudine G. Balasabas-BS Electrical Engineering, Jessa Marie S. Bernales-BSE Mathematics, John Kayline C. Dejada-BSE Physical Science, Glenn Mark D. Fallera-BSE Physical Science, Randy L. Fenis-BSE Mathematics, Vincent F. Liaver-BSE Biological Science, Francis B. Planto-BS Infromation Technology, Helen Grace E. Sentina-BSE Biological Science, Kesser John S. Sibonga-BSE Physical Science, Shemariah F. Silla BSE Mathematics, and Mark Noel N. Torres. While Lloyd Vincent B. Sagabaen-BS Electrical Engineering is covered under the RA 7687 S&T Scholarship.

Republic Act 10612 or the ”Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013” and RA 7687 or the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994” award Bachelor of Science degree scholarships to students who wish to pursue priority fields of study in science, mathematics and engineering.

The qualifiers will enjoy tuition and other school fees not to exceed Php 10,000 per semester or Php 8,000 per term, textbook and school supplies allowance at Php 10,000 per school year. Those studying outside of their home province will also receive a round trip transportation fare monthly living allowance of Php 5,000 for a 10-11 month duration, group health and accident insurance and additional privilege during summer, if required in the curriculum.

DOST VI Regional Director Engr. Rowen G. Gelonga reiterated that the scholarship program is part of the department’s strategy to identify and nourish talented Filipino youth in science and technology, who can be the future front liners of a workforce that will bring about more breakthroughs in Philippine Science and Technology scenario.

ISAT U GAD joins campaign to EVAWC

In support to the annual 18-day campaign to End Violence Against Women and their Children (EVAWC), the ISAT U Gender and Development (GAD) program organized a series of activities that simultaneously kicked off with a caravan in all campuses of the ISAT U system on November 25, 2016.

The 4th GAD Hataw to Fight AIDS was part of the campaign and supports the World Aids Day celebration on December 1. Clad in red shirt, students and ISAT U personnel sweated out in the early morning Sumba at the Multi-purpose Educational Center.

A film showing featuring BOSES, a Tagalog indie film, was held to help students visualize the realities of child abuses in a Filipino community.

The GAD Public Forum on VAW was also facilitated to give significance to the campaign’s theme “VAW Free Community Starts with Me.” Dr. Maria Francia M. Laxamana, Department of Health Assistant Secretary on Technical Services, was the resource speaker and emphasized in her message the role of the victims of sexual abuses to help end violence. Dr. Laxamana encouraged the audience not to fear but to come out if they were victims of abuses. The students were also reminded of the effects of social media on their perception towards sexuality. The influence of pornographic sites were found to be one of the causes of sexual violence and pre-marital sex among the youth. RA 9262 or the Anti-violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 and the Reproductive Health Bill were also discussed in the forum.

The GAD quiz bee was organized to create learning experience among the students. Eddie Bert Hechanova, Raichelle Solivio and Derwin Lapating of Barotac Nuevo Campus took home the championship certificate and the P 7, 000 cash prize. The team from Miagao Campus received P4, 000 and certificate as second place winners while the College of Arts and Sciences, Main Campus received certificates and pocketed P 3,000 as third place winners.

The 18- day campaign ended with the 1st GAD Song Writing Contest. Prof. Emelie A. de la Cruz, ISAT U GAD focal person, said that the students wrote songs inspired by love, respect, end to violence and the importance of gender equality. Diskriminasyon composed by Vincent Carl Elipe, BS Information Technology (Main Campus), bested all other entries and won P 7, 000 cash prize. Respeto at Paggalang sa Mga Kababaihan by Kevin Cloyd Subosa and Dominic Paul Balinsoy, BS Electrical Engineering (Main Campus), won as first runner-up and a cash prize of P 6, 000. Meant to be Loved by Andy Josh Sondia, College of Arts and Sciences (Main Campus), landed third place and won P5, 000.

Other entries that received consolation prizes were The Value of Her Beauty (Jan Christian Palma), Set Me Free (Angel Faith Poblacion), Kontra Abuso (Stephen Palabrica), Respeto (BIT- Miagao) and Pagbabago (Glenn P. Sumbanon-BSIT Dumangas).

The Laboratory High School students shone in the 28^th Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) National Assembly of High School Students and 21^st YMCA National High School Club Advisers Seminar held on December 10-13, 2016 at the Senior Mess Hall Teachers’ Camp, Baguio City.

Mark Angelo Aguado and Carlo Panistante earned the trust of their fellow delegates and were elected as YMCA Marshals.

The students also displayed their excellence in the literary-musical presentation. Aguado and Milisa Joy Jacaba emerged Champion in the Ballroom Dancing. Jacaba also landed in the Third Place of Talentadong “Y” Individual Category contest. Meanwhile, Kenneth John Padernal topped the Essay Writing Contest (Filipino Category).

The delegates continued to reap honors in the 54^th National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute (NRYLI) which was held at the same venue on Dec. 14-17 after the YMCA Assembly.

Two participants were given citations for their active participation which enhanced the documentation of the proceedings of the leadership congress. Shiela Muya (Writer/News Editor) and Ruemmel James Sollesta (Cartoonist) were recognized for the on time publishing of The Leader, the NRYLI Publication. Muya was also one of the Top Ten Finalist in the Lakambini ng YMCA. Another Lab School stand out was Eden Mae Villarete who won third place in the YMCA Recycled Art, and First Placer in the NRYLI Commission 7 Makabayang SAYAWITAN contest.
