45 faculty members attend MMP

A total of  45 faculty members from the  Iloilo Science and Technology (ISATU)-La Paz and the External Campuses  attended the “Mentoring the Mentors” Program (MMP) last October 26-28, 2015 at the Ed Tech Center.

The three-day MMP was conducted in partnership with the Foundation for Worldwide People Power Inc. (FWWPPI) and Marie Eugenie Institute Inc. The program aims to create an Education Revolution in the Philippines by empowering teachers to become effective and passionate agents of change  through the adoption of the mentoring approach towards students, teachers and staff.

As a jumpstart topic in the seminar, Ms. Lilia G. Ramos, MMP Regional Trainer, discussed the current crisis of Philippine education. The Bologna Accord, an agreement to reform higher education among several countries and which does not recognize Philippine diplomas, was given emphasis. This topic led to the essentiality of mentoring teachers.

Another discussion that was emphasized during the workshop was the “akin” and “atin” mentality. Ms. Ramos explained that “akin” mentality refers to the self-interest that is detrimental to the greater good. The “Akin” mentality, on the other hand, is a gratuitous service that seeks to contribute the greater good.

The three-day workshop also taught participants to opt for qualitative approach rather than the quantitative approach. This portion of the seminar explained that most instructors fall into a trap of having voluminous materials ending up missing out the most crucial concepts to teach.

MMP also enlightened participants about mentoring roles and practices, character value and information, active teaching and learning strategies and building win-win relationships among students and teachers.

At the end of the workshop, the participants enriched their action plans as part of their teaching practices. 

 

Search for ISAT U Private Sector Reps now open

Pursuant to RA 8292/10595, the Board of Regents of Iloilo Science and Technology (ISAT U) fornally and publicly announces that the positions for Two (2) members of the Board of Regents representing the PRIVATE SECTOR are now open.

The nominee/applicant must have the following minimum qualifications:

  1. At least be thirty (30) years of age on the date of his appoinment;
  2. A resident of Iloilo for at least three (3) years prior to his appointment as such;
  3. Morally upright and has no record of criminal, civil or administrative conviction.
  4. The Private Sector Representative nominee shall not in any way be connected with the SUC in any manner, for two years prior to his or her nomination for the PSR position.
  5. Not in any way be presently employed or appointed in any position  with any government (local, national and in government owned and controlled corporations) agency or entity, in manner, be it full time or part time. at the time his or her nomination in the position;
  6. Should be from the industry, business or professions in line with the programs of ISAT U (e.g. Agriculture, Engineering, Industrial Technology, Information Technology, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Education and Science.) 
  7. Should have distinguished record of employment, business, expertise and connection with the private sector. If the PRS nominee previously worked with a government entity or was a consultant in any government  undertaking the proportion of the time the nominee served in the government should not exceed one fourth of the entire time the nominee served in the private sector.

 

In order to serve these minimum requirements, the nominator or the nominee should provide all the pertinent details of the nominee's past and current employment/service records, connection to the industry, field of expertise, achievement, non-connection with the SUC, no current employment or availability  of the nominee to serve as PSR, in proper nomination form that should be notarized with the pertinent supporting documentation.

The nominee should accept the nomination by signing his/her conforme on the designated portion of the notarized nomination form.

The nomination form may be obtained from the official University Website wvcst.edu.ph or Office of the Board Secretary.

All nominations/applications must be accompanied by the applicant's vision and duly accomplished personal data form to include attachments and must be personally submitted or by courier not later than December 10, 2015

2 BSMEAE studes receive Toyota scholarship

Two students taking up Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering major in Automotive Engineering (BSMEAE) received  scholarship grant from the Toyota Motor Philippines, Inc. 

Jojo C. Enriquez (BSMEAE-4) and Miel Roque M. Casas (BSMEAE-3) became scholars after attaining  the highest average grade  among the 16 applicants  and topping the panel interview conducted last October 22 at the Function Room.

The panel of interviewers was composed of Dr. Russ Allen Napud, Dean, College of Engineering and Architecture; Engr. Edgar Allan J. Vargas, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering major in Automotive Engineering; Mr. Ronald Gaspar, Head, Education Department of Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation Inc; and Mr. Jonathan Ramos from Toyota, Iloilo, Inc..

As scholars, their privileges include free tuition and miscellaneous fees, monthly stipend of Php 1,300  and Php 2, 500 book allowance.

“I won’t take for granted the opportunity that is given to me,” Mr. Casas said in his message during the announcement of the new scholars.

The new scholars  received Toyota t-shirts and caps during the announcement. They thanked the company, teachers and friends for giving them the inspiration to become scholars.

 

                                                                                                                     

Student-Administration dialogue conducted

A Student-Administration Dialogue sponsored by the Student Republic (SR) was held last Oct. 5 at the Ed Tech Center. 

The dialogue was held in order for students to have a venue to raise and clarify some issues  and concerns from the administration.

The Administrative Council and student leaders coming from the different organizations of the university attended the activity. 

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Raul F. Muyong, University President, encouraged the students to voice out their thoughts and concerns about issues that are of importance to them. He also emphasized that they are not there to defend themselves, but to listen instead with the suggestions that they might give for the improvement of the services the university can offer to them.

“Students are one of the most important stakeholders in this educational institution,” Dr. Muyong stated in his welcome speech. Along with the university president, members of the Administrative Council also answered every sentiment, feedback and question raised by the students.

In answer to the query of the adminstration's plan for the marine engineering students, the administration informed the students that additional simulators will be procured. 

The dialogue also answered questions on the implementation of  K-12.

As inquired by most students, Dr. Muyong made it clear that SUCs are not mandated by law to offer Senior High School (SHS) Program but would support DepEd in its implementation of K-12. The university will partner with DepEd schools that would like to have a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with ISAT U.  

Dr. Muyong said that in preparation for the transition to the K to 12  system next year, the university will expand its curricular programs. He also gave his plans for the faculty members without loads during the two-year transition: faculty members without doctorate degrees will be sent for further studies while shop teachers for industry immersion. He would also see to it that General Education (GE) teachers will be able to teach subjects in a specific discipline.The university will coordinate with DepEd for GE teachers to be sent to  partner high schools like Iloilo National High School as a way of supporting them to continue their loads.

 “Tuition fees would not increase because of K-12,” Dr. Muyong  emphasized during the dialogue. He also added that the university will still accept first year students.  By year 2018, however, all those who  failed to enroll in 2016 will have to enter senior high school, which is a major requirement for students to undergo college.

Aside from these issues, there were also discussions about flooding, payment at the cashier's office, defective electric fans and other facilties, attitude problems of some faculty and staff, laboratoryequipment and fees, school uniform, scholarship allowance, ambulant vendors, use of social media by students, etc. These were answered and resolved by the administration.

After bringing out the issues on the departments involved, the forum ended at 11:30 a.m.

3 campus orgs qualify in top 7 Greenwich Aralkada Program

Three campus organizations of Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) qualified in the the top seven (7)  of the Greenwich Aralkada Program.

The selected youth organizations are College of Engineering and Architecture Students Council (CEA-SC), Environmental Club and The Technovator.  The three organizations qualified based on the project concepts presented last October 3 before the Greenwich Aralkada Program panelists.

CEA-SC’s project entitled, “Captivate, Engage, Attract – Spawn Children’s Interest in Science and Math” (CEA-SCISM) aims to provide a learning center for teaching Math and Science using an Outcome Based Education (OBE) system. This modern and innovative approach is expected to create a big impact in encouraging Grade 3 and 6 pupils of Taal Elementary School at Barangay East Timawa, Molo, and Iloilo City in learning Science and Math.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As for the Environmental Club, its “Project Hunol” aims to seek for beneficiaries who need assistance in academic performance. The project has plans on organizing a weekend peer tutoring session that will foster the barkadahan of the youth.

Project Hunol will also develop an interactive workbook that will uplift the functional literacy of the pupils. The school, (Aripdip Elementary School from District of San Rafael) will receive seeds for development and source of nutrition for the students. A multi-purpose room will be constructed in the school to serve as an avenue for the beneficiaries to harness their academic performance and enhance a school-to-community relation.

On the other hand, the Technovator’s project will implement Aralkada Functional Literacy Program among elementary pupils (Grades 4-6) of San Rafael Central School for six months. Different learning activities will be contributed by the staff from their field of specialization to hone students’ academic skills and performance. A livelihood program will be introduced to the pupil’s parent or guardian to meet the necessary needs of the pupils like school supplies and other educational materials.

As preparation for the implementation of the organizations’ projects, the Greenwich Aralkada Program, provided them with commendations and recommendations on the project concepts they presented.  

For making it to the top 7, five representatives from each organization attended the Greenwich Alkarada Youth Camp last October 23-25 at Damires Hills Tierra Verde, Brgy. Damires, Janiuay, Iloilo. The three-day youth camp was for the purpose of helping the groups improve their project ideas further by understanding functional literacy.

The projects will be implemented  in November to March 2016.

Official school calendar released

Approved by the university president on September 14, 2015, the calendar will keep the university officials, faculty, non-teaching personnel and students, properly informed and updated on national and local holidays, activites and the latest major events on campus.

Univ holds tribute to teachers, employees

As a way  of honoring teachers and employees who continue to inspire students with their knowledge, skills and commitment, ISAT U marked World Teacher’s Day last Oct. 5 with a Tribute to Teachers and Employees at the ISAT U Covered Gym.

With the theme “Empowering Teachers, Building Sustainable Societies,” the celebration opened with a thanksgiving mass in honor of the teachers and employees.  

This was followed by the program proper  which started with a welcome address from Ms. Losette A. Dela, President of the Student Republic.

Speaking on behalf of the Student Republic, Ms. Dela expressed her never-ending gratitude to the teachers and employees who became sources of wisdom and knowledge with the years spent in the institution.

Dr. Raul F. Muyong also paid tribute to the teachers by giving an inspiring message. 

“Teachers are tasked to shape humanity,” Dr. Muyong said in one of his statements. The university president enumerated the contributions of a teacher to society.

“A man is formed and honed by his teacher. The best gift to be given among teachers is for them to be good and to attend their classes all the time.” He also challenged the teachers to provide quality education to  ISAT U students.

The event also showcased a solidarity dance performed by SR officers and  presentation of students from the different colleges as tribute to the teachers and employees.

In honor of their years of service to the university,  the institution awarded them with plaques of appreciation and recognition .The awardees included the following:

COE, CEA reps bag 1st Mr & Ms ISAT U title

Zesrimar F. Historia of the College of Education (COE) and Joan C. Porras of the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) bagged the first ever title of Mr. and Ms. Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) during the pageant night held on Sept. 1 at the ISAT U Multi-Purpose Gym.

Historia also romped off with the Mr. Photogenic, People’s Choice, Best in Sports Wear and Best in Formal Attire Special Awards. .Porras, on the other hand, won the Ms. Photogenic Award, People’s Choice Award and Best in Formal and Cocktail Attire.

Other winners of the title were Rio Apolinario III (College of Arts and Sciences-CAS) and Rhinae Mae O. Palma (College of Industrial Technology-CIT), 1st runner up;  Christian Arsaga (CIT) and Roma Abelarde (CAS),  2nd runner up; Mharbani B. Ma-ambong (CEA) and Michelle Ann Malabayabas (Miag ao Campus), 3rd runner up; and Christine Jessica D. Martin (COE) with Jetro Tigulo (Miag ao Campus), 4th runner up.

During the competition, the candidates displayed their poise, beauty and intelligence. which was gauged through the interview. Arsaga (CIT) and Malabayabas (Miag ao Campus) nailed the pageant's interview portion.

Adjudged Mr. and Ms. Congeniality, another special award, were Apolinario (CAS) and Palma (CIT).  

For the Minor awards, Ma-ambong (CEA) and Malabayabas (Miag ao Campus) were proclaimed best in production number award; Historia (COE) and Malabayabas (Miagao Campus), best in sports wear competition; Apolinario  (CAS) won the best in formal wear while Porras (CEA) won best in Cocktail attire competition;  and Historia (COE) and Abelarde(CAS),  best in gown and formal attire.

“We might produce national and international beauty queens,” said Dr. Raul F. Muyong, University President, in his speech. The activity, according to Dr. Muyong, is in keeping the university's goal to develop well-rounded individuals through extra-curricular activities.

Alfred Jor el Espinosa, Michelle Marie Monte Gacuma and Rexcel John B. Sorza served as judges.

The new titlists will represent ISAT U  in the  Regional  Search for Mr. and Ms State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA)  in Roxas City, Capiz tentatively scheduled on December 14-18, 2015.

 

Univ installs new president

The Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) formally installed Dr. Raul F. Muyong as its first University President in investiture rites held on Sept. 3.

Dr. Muyong’s investiture, which is four months after he was elected, started at 4:00 p.m. at the ISAT U Multi- Purpose Educational Center.

During the investiture rites, Dr. Manuel A. Sanchez,Jr., VP for Academic Affairs, presented the University President to the academic community while Dr. Mergie C. Gasataya, University Board Secretary, read the Board Resolution of the university president's appointment. . 

Dr.Rex Casiple, CHED, Educational Program Specialist, read the appointment issued by Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan, CHED Chairperson, on behalf of Commissioner Maria Cynthia Rose B. Bautista, Chair-Designate, ISAT U Board of Regents,  

Dr. Casiple also vested the academic robe, academic hood and cap, Imposed the President’s Medallion and  presented the President’s Mace.

On behalf of Dr. Licuanan, Dr. Rex C. Casiple,  also administered the oath taking of the University President.

In his speech, Dr. Muyong expressed his sincere gratitude to the people who helped him including his former professors, friends, colleagues and relatives.

“Now, is a great opportunity for me to serve,” said Dr. Muyong in his investiture address.

Dr. Muyong also thanked the ISAT U community for trusting and believing in him. He is the fourth president of WVCST and upon its conversion  became the first  president of the newly converted university.

The members of the Search Committe for the WVCST Presidency namely Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman, Dr. Isabela L. Mahler, Prof. Samie M. Billanes, Dr. Joel P. Limson, and Mr. Celso G. Javelosa were also awarded plaques of recognition.

A dinner for all the guests, faculty and staff capped the event.
